We love to highlight places that you, as a visitor to Maui, may not know to check out, but that will give you a great, local experience and help you support other local businesses like ours. Today, we’re looking at my favorite food truck, Ono Tacos.
Ono Tacos – Lahaina
Things to know: no alcohol, cash only — Price range: $7-15 per person (depending on your appetite)
Few foods are as satisfying after a long day at the beach as fresh-cooked tacos (poke is up there, but that’s another blog post). While Maui has a lively Maui-Mex scene that combines Hawaiian flavors and Mexican food classics, it can take a little work to find Mexican food that tastes authentic and doesn’t break the bank. Look no further than Lahaina Town’s best resident food truck: Ono Tacos.
Located about a block from Front Street (read: from significantly pricier restaurants), Ono Tacos has a simple, delicious menu stocked with classic street tacos, massive burritos, and some specialty items. It’s easy to get a full meal and drink for around $10 (they only take cash, so plan accordingly). Believe me, it’s worth every penny, especially after a long day of shopping on Front Street or beach-combing.
When I stop by on my lunch break (I work at the ukulele store a few doors down), I almost always order the steak tacos and use the medium green sauce when I visit, but when I’m feeling like going all-out, their shrimp tacos are to die for. My coworker Kalen recommends the burritos and also suggests adding nacho cheese to it (when available and for a small charge). They don’t have much in the way of dessert, so you may want to head to Front Street for shaved ice or gelato.
Next time you’re on Maui, stop by and leave us a comment about your experience!
