It’s always nice to bring friends and family gifts from travels. You may even find the perfect birthday or Christmas gift while on island. Here are a few of our favorite Maui gifts and souvenirs.
Macadamia nuts are a slightly sweet nut with a soft, somewhat oily texture (closer to peanuts than almonds). They come in all kinds of seasonings, from salty ones to caramel- and chocolate coated. These are available at many of the island’s grocery stores and pharmacies, as these often have a general souvenirs aisle.
Kukui nut or ‘opihi shell lei
While these are more expensive than a standard flower lei, they last forever and are much classier than an all-plastic lei. Kukui nut leis usually come in black or white, but you can find ‘opihi leis in brown, purple, and even some shades of red, as the shells naturally vary in color.
If you’ve got a friend or family member with a small child, why not bring them back a fairy tale set here in the islands? From an island version of The Three Little Pigs to island originals like Limu the Blue Sea Turtle, you can find all sorts of short stories for the little ones.
Plastic toy ukuleles abound and are available everywhere; these ones are perfect for small kids. However, if you want a genuine, playable ukulele, you will want to visit a music store. While a little more pricey than most of the other items on the list, you can find great instruments on island, and if you’re looking for an important gift for someone special, this is a great choice.
It’s no secret that we like coffee at Ohana Fun. Kona coffee tends to be more expensive than Maui coffee, and it has a smoother flavor. Maui coffee is a little more citrus-y. Both are delicious; in college, I would bring professors bags of Maui coffee after Christmas break. Also, you can pick up travel mugs and standard coffee cups for them to sip their island coffee from!
Whether you are looking for a high-end gold piece or shell earrings, you can find plenty of beautiful jewelry on island. One of my favorite places to find cool, affordable bracelets and earrings is the Maui Swap Meet, which meets every Saturday.
Lavender farm tea or cookies
If you make it up to the Lavender farm, be sure to pick up something for someone who would appreciate a gift that’s just a bit out of the box.
Aloha shirts are available in just about every price range and to every fashion sensibility. Stores like Hilo Hattie’s in Lahaina will have shirts available in bold colors as well as more subtle ones, perfect for your cool college son or your stylish brother on his day off. Best of all, there are also ladies’ cuts and children’s sizes available, so no one is left out of the fun!
Of course, going classic with a souvenir isn’t a bad idea. All of these items are going to be available in the aforementioned souvenirs aisle as well as ABC Stores, Whaler’s General Stores, and several branded shops on Front Street in Lahaina. Keep your eyes open for designs you like; there’s plenty to choose from!
A whole pineapple
One great, last-minute gift is buying a pre-inspected pineapple to bring home. Of course, you may want to pick up two so you can have one to yourself.
We hope you enjoy picking out Maui gifts to take home for your friends and family.
